Expert tips for prep, installation, and care
creating a lush healthy lawn begins with proper prep work
Soil Preparation and Amendment
The secret to a healthy lawn is in the dirt. Kill existing vegetation with Round-Up 7 days prior. Roto-till your yard and remove any rocks bigger than 1/2 inch. Because Boise soils are heavily clay-based, we highly recommend tilling in our premium topsoil to improve drainage and prevent compaction. Grade your final soil level 2 inches below your concrete walkways.
Laying the Sod
Install your sod the exact same day it is delivered. Lightly moisten the bare soil first. Roll out the sod, fitting seams tightly together without overlapping, and stagger the joints in a brick-like pattern. Have sharp knives ready to cut around sprinkler heads and curved edges.
Watering Your New Lawn
Do not let the sod dry out for the first three weeks! Water several times a day initially to keep it moist (but avoid creating standing mud). Once established, transition to watering less frequently but for longer periods in the early morning. Never water at night, as this encourages fungal disease.
Mowing and Fertilizing
Wait until the grass is over 3 inches tall before your first mow, and ensure your blades are sharp. Keep it around 2.5 inches for the first few months. You do not need to fertilize for the first 30 days.
SIMPLE STEPS TO MEASURE FOR SOD
Step 1
Sketch out a general layout of your yard. It does not need to be to scale. Break up your yard areas into sections that will allow you to measure each area using the length times the width. Leave the tough oddball shapes for last. For now, try to block out each area.
Step 2
Measure each of the areas you have identified on your sketch using feet. Measure the walkways, driveway, pool, patios, flowerbeds, gardens, etc. using the same block method so you can subtract those areas out.
Step 3
Multiply the length times the width and get the total footage for each of the areas. Guesstimate the oddball sections and figure the footage as closely as possible. Total the overall footages of the area of your yard.
Step 4
Total the footages of the walkways, flowerbeds, etc. Take the hard surface area totals and subtract them from the overall footage. You now have a fairly accurate net footage of the sod you will need.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much does a pallet of sod weigh, and can I pick it up?
A full pallet of fresh sod (500sq. ft.) weighs approximately 2,000-2,500lbs, depending on how recently it was cut and watered. Never attempt to transport a full pallet in a non-heavy-duty pickup as it will exceed payload capacity. We are happy to load full or partial pallets into heavy-duty trucks or trailers at our Meridian yard using our forklifts.
How soon do I need to install the sod after delivery?
Immediately. Sod is a living, perishable product. It must be installed within 24 hours of being cut, ideally the exact same day it is delivered or picked up. Letting it sit on the pallet will cause it to “heat up”, which kills the root system and results in yellow, dying turf. Ensure your soil is prepped, leveled, and ready before the sod arrives.
Will a new lawn survive the intense Idaho summer heat?
Yes, but success requires aggressive, deep watering support. While the optimal sod laying windows in the Treasure Valley are spring (April-May) and fall (September-October), professional installation can be successful in the summer. Because we utilize Idaho-acclimated grass blends with established root systems, they are resilient. You must commit to a precise summer watering schedule to ensure the turf establishes successfully.
How often do I need to water newly planted sod?
Improper watering is a main cause of sod failure in the Treasure Valley. To establish roots, new sod must be kept moist constantly for the first 14 days. During an Idaho summer, this often means watering 3–5 times per day for 5–10 minutes each time. Never let the edges of the rolls curl or dry out. After two weeks, you can gradually transition to deep, less-frequent morning watering (e.g., 30+ minutes, 2-3 times per week) to encourage deep root growth in our clay soils.
Do I need to fertilize my new sod immediately?
No. Our farm-fresh sod is already highly fertilized and nutrient-dense. Adding starter fertilizer immediately can actually “burn” the establishing root system and kill the grass. Wait at least 30–60 days before your first fertilization. We recommend a slow-release “starter” fertilizer that promotes root health over blade growth for the first application after establishment.
