Pavers are sold by the square foot (often packaged by the pallet or half-pallet). Calculating your needs is straightforward, but you must account for the stones that will be cut during installation.

The Rule of Thumb:

Always add a 5% to 10% ‘Waste Factor’ to your total square footage to account for the blocks you will need to cut to fit your edges and corners!

Calculation Steps:

Step 1: Measure the total Length and Width of your planned project area in feet.

Step 2: Multiply Length x Width to get your base Square Footage.

Step 3: Multiply your base Square Footage by 1.10 (to add a 10% waste buffer).

Step 4: Bring this final number to the yard! Our team will help you convert that square footage into exact pallet and layer counts for your specific paver choice.

A patio is only as strong as its base. You should never lay pavers directly on dirt. For a standard pedestrian patio or walkway, excavate the soil and lay down 4 to 6 inches of compacted 3/4″ minus crushed gravel (road base), topped with a 1-inch layer of leveling sand. For driveways, that gravel base needs to be 8 to 12 inches deep.

Yes! Polymeric sand is swept into the joints of your pavers after they are laid, and then activated with a light mist of water. The sand hardens like a flexible concrete, locking the pavers tightly together, preventing weeds from growing between the cracks, and stopping ants from burrowing into your patio.

While sealing is not strictly mandatory, we highly recommend it. A quality penetrating sealer protects your concrete pavers from BBQ grease stains, prevents the sun from fading the color over time, and can enhance the vibrancy of the stone.
